Places to visit in the South of France

France is the top destination for holidaymakers worldwide. Whether its sightseeing in Paris or soaking up the sun along the Cote d'Azur, tourists just can't get enough! But whilst Nice and Paris are the obvious options, there are other cities which go overlooked.

Having spent the last four months in the South of France, I have been lucky enough to explore a number of places which I had not known existed. With plenty of options for History enthusiasts, sun worshippers or party-goers, here is a list of my top picks in the South of France...

Carcassonne

Home to UNESCO world heritage site Château Comtal, architecture buffs will fall in love with this quaint medieval old town. The castle lies in the heart of Carcassonne and offers stunning views that are definitely worth the walk up. Once at the top, enjoy a meal at Chez Christine, where you can get a taste of mediterranean cuisine. Be sure to try the traditional French dish Cassoulet while you're there. In the evening, watch the sunset from within the fortified walls of the city and see the castle light up. The city is very walkable and you can easily see everything in one day but it's a day trip that I would 100% recommend.

Séte

I came here with some friends for the first time in October and instantly fell in love. With its beautiful beaches and numerous canal networks, this port town is just enchanting. Whether its taking a stroll along the canal or swimming in the crystal clear waters, Séte is a perfect getaway that avoids the swarms of people in more popular seaside resorts such as Nice. If you get the chance, take the bus or walk up Mont St Clair for panoramic views of the port. This peaceful hidden gem should definitely be on your bucket list!

Toulouse

This is probably the most famous destination on this list but it is definitely a must-see for History enthusiasts. Home to a Romanesque Cathedral and a number of historical buildings such as La Capitole, the monumental architecture will be sure to leave a lasting impression. Take a stroll through the Jardin Japonais for a moment of tranquility and find your inner zen. Returning to the city centre, there is no shortage of bars that you can check out.

Perpignan

Toward the Spanish border, French and Catalan cultures fuse together in the city of Perpignan. I went there with some friends to see the Medieval festival and had the chance to marvel at the impressive buildings. The city's rich historical heritage is echoed throughout the city - from the museums to the rustic coloured buildings. Just 15km away you will find the beaches of Canet-en-Rousillon and Sainte-Marie, making this city a perfect destination for those who want to enjoy the sun and immerse themselves in the history.
